Hard as it may seem

Hard as it may now seem

I must become my own mother and father

There are no longer any parents

Here to talk to

And the ghosts of their pasts

Continue to haunt each of our family

Along the ancestral line

Until we understand

They were only themselves

Wounded children

Struggling to survive

And to stay alive

We will understand and heal

The loving mother

Is in fact

So absent from our culture

That our hunger grows

With our bellies

Desperate for a food

And nourishment

Not of this world

And while the earth and all of nature

Weeps at our disorientation

And emptiness

We will only continue to become further lost

If we do not wake up

And learn how to be

A loving and nurturing

Mother and father

To ourselves

And each other
