Love you are there
Even if hidden underneath
All that is hard bitter broken or bleeding
It might just be that for a long time
All we feel
So intensely
Is the agony of love’s absence
As it appears to be stolen
By the actions of others
That issued from their own
Deeply hidden and wounded places
But never the less
Even by your absence
Love
You make your hidden presence
Felt
In our longing
Even as we lie curled up so tight with pain
Feeling as though the blossoming of our spirit
Will never come again
But even after the longest and harshest of winters
Observe how tenaciously
The tender shoot of a nascent sapling grows
Peaking itself out
From a crack in the pavement
So it is with all the love that gets
Depressed
Compressed
Squeezed down
Deep inside of us
One day it will rear its head again
And our awakening will be like birth
Attended with much blood and pain
Just as the sun’s face will surely appear again
After days and days of overcast storms
And driving rain
