Last night I was watching a documentary on the 7 days following Princess Diana’s death and as I watched I was googling astrology charts for both her and the Prince of Wales as well as the death chart. As some may know Princess Diana died a day before a Solar Eclipse in Virgo and Virgo relates very strongly to the earth mother and bountiful goddess of the harvest. Ideally if we were grounded in our true deep feminine this is the well spring we would drink from as a culture but to my mind we lost our way to it years and years ago as evolutionary development has pulled us onto a patriarchal pathway often at odds with it. Many of us bear also the deep mother wounds from maternal abandonment. With her Sun in the sign ruled by the Moon, Cancer Princess Diana carried this wound and the multigenerational dimension of this wounding is shown in her chart as she carries, like me and many of us born in the 1960s the Chiron Pluto opposition from Pisces to Virgo.
There is so much that can be written about what a comparison of the charts shows but what I most especially noticed this afternoon was the in the synastry chart (which is how two charts connect and compare in relation to where planets of someone’s horoscope fall on another person’s birth chart.) In the case of Diana and Charles her Pluto, or the planet of transformation, falls on his Saturn (planet of psychological defences and limitations and ancestral inherited emotional karma) in Virgo. Diana herself had a conjunction of Mars (ruling the masculine) with Pluto in her own chart showing intense emotions run deep and that the issue of subterfuge could be strong in her dealings with men.
When googling the death of Princess Diana last night I came across a news article in which the Prince of Wales was saying how much pain all the present documentaries on her death and life is causing him. Please note that we have just had two eclipses which hit the death chart of PD in very powerful ways. At the time of the crash on August 31, 1997 the Moon in Leo was around 15- 18 degrees Leo opposing Jupiter at 14 Aquarius. The lunar eclipse of a few weeks ago took place across the 14-15 degrees of Leo and Aquarius. The eclipse which followed her death on the 1st of September had Mercury (plant of communications and short journeys) retrograde – or moving backwards to connect with a Sun Moon conjunction in Virgo which hit PD’s Pluto in Virgo and Prince Charles’ Saturn in the same sign. Add to this that PD’s Chiron in Pisces also makes strong aspects to PC’s Saturn, her deepest emotional and spiritual wound was sparked most acutely by his defences and repressions.
Reading this article and then contemplating the connections it becomes clear that Princess Diana had an important mission of awakening to bring about. Most especially for Charles. There is an ideal which has dominated the monarchy in the past, of the virgin marriage. The Prince is to marry a virgin (the sign of Virgo relates to the virgin and the virgin birth). But with the Prince’s Sun in Scorpio it shows that his emotional and sexual passions run deep and must often be hidden due to fear or shame or more likely due to cultural forces of repression affecting a soul in adverse ways. He was able to conduct a sexual affair with a non virgin while marrying Diana who suffered her own deep maternal abandonment. In many ways she was like a young lamb led to the slaughter. This wound which has a generational context means that the victim archetype, associated with strong connections between personal planets of PD’s Sun and Mercury became very powerfully projected.
Pluto makes us confront the depths of what is most hidden. Saturn would rather keep up walls and defences rather than feel the truth of what its own repression may have brought about. Saturn relates strongly to shame or guilt. When this planet aspects a personal planet we are likely to feel shame just for being vulnerable, human and subject to so many forces outside of our self control. Prince Charles himself was in many ways unnurtured emotionally so in many ways PD may have carried aspects of his own wounded feminine. He however always had a strong mother present who obviously dominated his psyche, while he unconsciously rebelled against that, trying to live a life free of certain prohibitions an earlier generation felt they must accept.
There is so much more to write on the astro synastry of the charts. But for now I was very interested to see that what is being evoked for the Prince of Wales presently is part of a larger drama playing out. I recently read in a book on Radical Forgiveness that the task of Diana may have been to awaken the heart chakra of the UK. Her Sun and Mercury in Cancer widely oppose the UK sun in Capricorn and Cancer relates to emotions. It is interesting to note the Prince William, like his mother also has two planets in lunar ruled Cancer.- the sun and the moon. He was actually born just after a Solar Eclipse in that sign. In the documentary last night the strength of buried emotion was something he spoke a lot about. At the funeral a curtain of hair hid his face. He said how he hoped it may have made his sadness invisible. The Cancerian crab hides its tender vulnerable side under a hard shell. We all know that his grief over the painful loss of his mother would have been huge and how hard it would have been to see millions shedding tears he found so hard to release. My heart went out to him so much. I just wanted to wrap my arms around the young boy, take him to a safe loving place and help him cry. No doubt a lot of projection is part of that desire, having lost my own father and being also alone in many ways, though at an older age.
Death of famous individuals often accompany eclipses. It is interesting to note that Mercury at that time was moving backwards very close to the degree it occupies at the moment. When such deaths occur they are very significant. Another interesting connection to note is that the recent solar eclipse in the late degrees of Leo falls right on top of Princess Diana’s North Node in Leo. The North Node of the Moon relates to a spiritual destiny, and with Leo highlighted it is an important theme that when she died she was struggling to carve out an individual identity outside of social systems (which can be seen as relating to the South Node in Aquarius).
There is much more to be said about the astrology but for today I was particularly interested to note the Saturn Pluto connection between both charts. Painful as it is for the past to be brought up in just such a way for the Prince of Wales such connections show that Diana’s death highlighted important issues for the Prince which may never go away and will have a lasting impact across later generations.
